berenice ABBOTT
in her words
She sought to create a broadly inclusive collection of photographs that together suggest a vital interaction between three aspects of urban life: the diverse people of the city; the places they live, work and play; and their daily activities. It was intended to empower people by making them realize that their environment was a consequence of their collective behavior (and vice versa).

Berenice Abbott can be considered the photographer of New York City. Abbott met Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray in New York, where she went to study sculpture. Through her work printing Man Ray’s photographs, Abbott herself discovered her talent as a photographer. During the 1930s she embarked on a project to capture the transformation of New York into a modern urban center. Abbott was particularly interested in the physical changes that the city had undergone, its changing neighborhoods with huge skyscrapers replacing older low-rise buildings. Berenice Abbott is remembered as one of the most independent, determined and respected photographers of the twentieth century.
